Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER - "The perfect crime scene 。 。 。 in the type of wild but smart caper that Grisham's readers love。"--Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

"Escapist entertainment 。 。 。 with elements of a more traditional Grisham thriller。"--Janet Maslin, T he New York Times

Just as Bruce Cable's Bay Books is preparing for the return of bestselling author Mercer Mann, Hurricane Leo veers from its predicted course and heads straight for Camino Island。 Florida's governor orders a mandatory evacuation, and most residents board up their houses and flee to the mainland, but Bruce decides to stay and ride out the storm。

The hurricane is devastating: Homes and condos are leveled, hotels and storefronts ruined, streets flooded--and a dozen people lose their lives。 One of the apparent victims is Nelson Kerr, a friend of Bruce's and an author of thrillers。 But the nature of Nelson's injuries suggests that the storm wasn't the cause of his death: He has suffered several suspicious blows to the head。

Who would want Nelson dead? The local police are overwhelmed in the aftermath of the storm and ill-equipped to handle the case。 Bruce begins to wonder if the shady characters in Nelson's novels might be more real than fictional。 And somewhere on Nelson's computer is the manuscript of his new book。 Could the key to the case be right there--in black and white? As Bruce starts to investigate, what he discovers between the lines is more shocking than any of Nelson's plot twists--and far more dangerous。

Not his best I don’t think。 Wasn’t as gripping as most previous books for me。

I wanted to read this book because I enjoyed Camino Island。 I liked the first book better but I am always a sucker for novels about books, libraries, or book stores。 Thank you, John Grisham。

Mark

Enjoyable。 Fast。 Just not something I came away feeling enriched by。。。

Doug

right to the very end before the truth was revealed who the killer was and why - excellent follow up to Camino Island

Ed Creedy

Grisham at his usual gripping best。

Really boring。 I had a really hard time finishing the ending。 There didn’t seem to be much transitioning as you read this。 I almost felt like some areas were repetitive in a sense。 There was not a lot of guessing on -who dunnit- and there wasn’t any suspense to make it a page turner。 This is my first John Grisham novel and I found liking how he wrote somewhat but the story wasn’t interesting enough I felt to keep my attention。 You’d get to the next chapter and have the same feelings and emotions Really boring。 I had a really hard time finishing the ending。 There didn’t seem to be much transitioning as you read this。 I almost felt like some areas were repetitive in a sense。 There was not a lot of guessing on -who dunnit- and there wasn’t any suspense to make it a page turner。 This is my first John Grisham novel and I found liking how he wrote somewhat but the story wasn’t interesting enough I felt to keep my attention。 You’d get to the next chapter and have the same feelings and emotions as the last。 The only thing I could really obtain from book is that there were rare books that were trying to be sold and one other fact about nursing homes。 I feel like the murder scene fell kind of flat, and quickly written and lots of characters for me made it harder to follow。 However, I will note I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t listened to on audio because at times would be caught in a daze。 。。。more

This was all over the place! I'm not sure what happened here, but this is surely not Grisham at his best。 This was all over the place! I'm not sure what happened here, but this is surely not Grisham at his best。 。。。more

Excellent story with likeable characters

I don't say this often, but Camino Winds was the most frustrating book I have ever read。 I didn't care much for the characters, the story line or the ever repeating notion of food/alcohol。 I waited for a great plot twist, as the blurb indicated, but it never arrived。 I was disappointed with the main character, Bruce Cable, as I found him to have little strength and drive。 Definitely not the John Grisham story telling I remember。 I don't say this often, but Camino Winds was the most frustrating book I have ever read。 I didn't care much for the characters, the story line or the ever repeating notion of food/alcohol。 I waited for a great plot twist, as the blurb indicated, but it never arrived。 I was disappointed with the main character, Bruce Cable, as I found him to have little strength and drive。 Definitely not the John Grisham story telling I remember。 。。。more

As entertaining as the Camino Island

A page-turner for sure with all the necessary ingredients plus an island atmosphere that reminds me of our summers on Hilton Head Island and which I love!

3* Camino Island setting + good guy Bruce = cool series with potential for more mysteries to be written :)

I like this book much better than the first Camino Island book。 Good description of the hurricane where the body was found。

Marlene

Rather light but enjoyable。

Mary Weibling

This was a great sequel。

Trevor Vick

It was good to return to Camino Island where reality can be put on hold as murders take place during hurricanes, where wonder-drugs facilitate fraud on an epic scale and the hub of the action is a humble down-town bookshop and the literati who frequent it。 Hope to return again sometime!

Robin

Good, easy read。

Joanne Crymble

Solid writing。 Likable main character。 Weird plot with little suspense。

I listened to this while doing yard work so some distraction involved; however, I didn't find it as engaging as many of Grisham's other works。 Perhaps the sub-topic of abusive nursing home care was also a turnoff for me。。。not that I doubt it exists, but just that it is a depressing subject matter。 I listened to this while doing yard work so some distraction involved; however, I didn't find it as engaging as many of Grisham's other works。 Perhaps the sub-topic of abusive nursing home care was also a turnoff for me。。。not that I doubt it exists, but just that it is a depressing subject matter。 。。。more

I listened to the audio book。 Didn’t realize this was tied to another Grisham Camino book until I finished。 I enjoyed this。。。characters were likable。 There were instances where people were introduced without context until much later which I wasn’t a fan of。 But overall a decent book。

Mark

I enjoyed this book as an easy and entertaining read。 Not a typical Grisham book since it is light on the lawyers, but still a fun read - perfect for the beach。 Always enjoy the bad guys who get what they deserve。 Familiar themes of greed, power, fraud woven into an interesting story。

This was one of the audiobooks "available now" at my library。 I returned it early as the voices/accents the narrator did annoyed me。 This was one of the audiobooks "available now" at my library。 I returned it early as the voices/accents the narrator did annoyed me。 。。。more
